OK, so this has been a really long time coming. I wrote the 𝔹𝕚𝕘 𝔾𝕚𝕣𝕝 ℕ𝕠𝕨 song over 20 years ago and recorded it over 15 years ago for my 𝕔𝕕 𝕒𝕝𝕓𝕦𝕞 ℂ𝕣𝕒𝕫𝕪 𝕋𝕒𝕝𝕜. It’s finally going to be released to streaming platforms everywhere!
Why now?
Because there is a 𝑫𝑨𝑵𝑪𝑬 𝑹𝑬𝑴𝑰𝑿 𝑽𝑬𝑹𝑺𝑰𝑶𝑵 to drop!

I thought I would share a little unheard track from the Crazy Talk album recording sessions. We had a lot of fun recording it — rather late in the day (probably about 2am) — and after a reasonable amount of wine and beer had been sipped… we recorded ‘Pretty Shiny Frisbees’. The relics of ancient civilisations are still being uncovered today — but what will future societies make of the stuff we are leaving behind us now, in the 21st century?

It is with icy fingers I type this missive… well, not icy, but it is quite a cold mid-winter for the North Coast of NSW. It has been an interesting time of consolidation since the Crazy Talk album was finished. Now that my mind is starting to clear a little from the haze of such a long process, I’m starting to get the CD out and about and book gigs for the coming Spring. Some new songs have started to bug me into writing too…
Rosie and The Thorns will be playing the Wingham Akoostik Music Festival on Saturday October 16th. The full lineup has not been announced yet, but includes Phil Jamieson (Grinspoon) and Wendy Matthews, so it will be an eclectic affair! The Festival website is at winghamakoostikfestival.com.au.
I was invited to contribute to the ABC Radio’s Sing Like Slim tribute to Slim Dusty. I will be singing my version of ‘Pub With No Beer’ in ABC’s Port Macquarie studios in July! You can read more about the project here and I’ll be sure to let you know when the date is approaching.

Chuffed to get a review from Martin Jones in Jan 2010 issue of Rhythms mag — Australia’s roots music monthly.
Rosie Sutherland is not exactly fresh to music (she first popped up in Andrew Kidman and Mark Sutherland’s Val Dusty Experiment in the mid-’90s), but this is her debut album under her own name.
Sutherland is a fan of left of centre American country — stuff like Neil Young and Lucinda Williams — but exudes a strong folk aesthetic in her writing and singing. She also exhibits the invaluable understanding of economy in her singing; delivering just what the song and lyric requires and no more. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said of her guitarist to whom on more than one occasion you just want to yell, ‘shut up for a second’!
Sutherland’s songs are strong enough that they would have shined all the brighter with a more stripped back approach to the recording, a theory that is finally backed up in the closing track, which blends a compelling solo rendition of ‘I Get Around’ with Sutherland’s own ‘Sweet Dreams’.

Stoked to be included in a such a fine publication — one of those rare music magazines that takes several sittings to read.
It is with regret that I have cancelled my upcoming shows in Tamworth. I have been in bed with a chest infection for a week and still need more time to recover. I was so looking forward to it, but now I’ll have to wait until Tamworth Festival 2011!
Happily, we are planning some shows in Tamworth before then, and in Sydney/Newcastle in the coming months too.
Phew, that’s about all I can manage… back to bed with hot lemon and honey tea…

It’s a fact for artists these days that music is freely available for download on the web — even ours! Yes, that’s right, Rosie and The Thorns have been pirated! And not just once, there’s a whole raft of sites where you can download hiqh-quality mp3s of ‘Crazy Talk’.
I know there is not much I can do about it and a part of me is kind of pleased to know that people have actually gone to the effort of uploading the album… occasionally even with their opinions of it! But trying to make a living from creative pursuits gets harder, even though the demand for new music is certainly not slowing down.

Crazy Talk came really easily as it was just tapping into the little voice in my head that babbles away all the time. That little voice pops up in my songs a lot, worrying about things all the time…
This song is for my father, uncle and grandfather, who have all, sadly, passed on. For the album recording I sampled an old reel-to-reel tape of my grandfather speaking about his experiences in World War II — in particular, his survival of the sinking of HMAS Perth.
I don’t pretend music is do-or-die like some professions, but I try not to be lazy or dishonest when I’m writing a song

Everybody scrubbed up pretty nicely, with the help of stylist Kelli and her bag of magic potions. Photographer Wednesday Sutherland broke her trusty old SLR (well, actually it just went on strike) but her Polaroid and digital were more reliable. I raided my wardrobe of vintage hand-me-downs and fooffed round in heavy sateen for the day.
Yes, we had fun!
